Ring my bell!
“La cloche, écho du ciel placé près de la terre!” (The bell, an “echo of heaven, brought to earth”), as penned by Victor Hugo, is one of the most ancient sound instruments. Modest, yet universal, it appears in many different forms, sizes, and shapes and is created from a variety of materials with an unlimited diversity of ornamentation.
As a “sounding vase”, the bell is characterised by its large acoustic range and its widely-varied use. It adds rhythm to our daily lives, both for lay (assemblies, alarms, calls, navigation, celebration, etc.) and sacred events (accompaniment and punctuation of religious ceremonies). Ceramists and bell-lovers: Design and create one, two or three large, small or mini bells to be used for any function. Your creation should reveal your hidden talents as an artist, technician, musicologist, inventor, ethnologist, handyman, poet, tinkerer, etc.
